Re: “We're not done until everybody's out of the water”
The Grateful Dead Rock Band held a news conference to promote their plans to help preserve the rain forests. Journalist: ”Well, Mr Garcia, what makes you think that a rock band can save the planet?” Gerry Garcia: “Well, somebody’s gotta do something. It’s just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us!”

Prerequisites:

Participants must have completed an EMDRIA Approved Basic Training in EMDR (both Part 1 and Part 2).

Learning Objectives:

  • to process through personal blocks, which are obstacles to working with difficult clients
  • to learn subtle advanced EMDR skills

Course Objectives:

This workshop aims to help therapists save themselves and the traumatized. A main concern of therapists is how to keep both themselves and the client safe and protected from retraumatization. It is more difficult for the clinician to provide safety and protection if they are feeling unsafe themselves. Clinicians tend to feel overly responsible and may slip into feeling ineffective, helpless or incompetent when confronted with what appears as the unfixable suffering of their clients. Associated with a failed attempt to protect the self from danger, the therapist’s early unprocessed trauma is retriggered by repeatedly hearing the traumatic stories of clients. Working with the skills they have already mastered, therapists can clear out the blocked process in their own work, which encourages relaxation, spontaneity, and renewed enjoyment of their practice.

Continuing Education Credits available.

Format:

  • Lecture, discussion, and demonstrations
followed by practicum to help therapists prevent vicarious traumatization by enhancing their skills at handling clients’ blocked process, incomplete sessions, and looping.
